BIM Design Coordination + Power BI: A powerful approach to project efficiency | Corbis: News & Agenda

In a recent live session hosted by Corbis House, we explored how our technical team uses Power BI within the BIM Design Coordination process to bridge the gap between technology and communication in BIM workflows. The webinar featured a real-world case study from a California senior housing project. Here’s the summary.

Through our work on diverse construction projects, we've seen firsthand how technology alone can't solve coordination challenges. Information must be accessible to all stakeholders and user-friendly to drive faster, more informed decisions. That's why our BIM team, led by Lucrecia Cocucci, Head of BIM; and Florencia Retamal and Franco Santillan, BIM Coordinators, created a game-changer: connecting BIM outputs with the Power BI interface.

This innovative combination unlocks the full potential of BIM technology, making it accessible to everyone on the design team. In this webinar we shared our lessons learned to keep exchanging knowledge as a critical way to further pushing the boundaries of our industry. Since Corbis House began, over twenty eminent industry speakers have taken part in the sessions that we host. Relive the latest chapter.

Power BI's interactive BIM report cuts rework by spotting conflicts early, saving time and money.

A revolutionary way to integrate all BIM Design coordination data

Through an exclusive 30-minute online session, we explored how our team is using Power BI within our BIM Design Coordination workflow to enhance communications, stakeholder involvement, and project efficiency. The webinar led by Franco Santillan, provided insights on a recent implementation of BIM Design Coordination on a California senior housing project.

The attendees could check the exercise results through a dynamic Power BI report, where the main highlights were:

- Critical issues found: 30% of the clashes were necessary and required immediate attention to avoid problems during construction.

- Proactive problem-solving approach: While not critical, the remaining clashes were still addressed to ensure a smooth construction process.

- Cost savings potential: By catching these issues early, we estimated a potential cost saving of around $330,000 for the project.

Report and charts of the above-mentioned example

According to our experience in the field and the feedback we have gathered from our clients, these are the benefits of this innovative approach:

- Stronger collaboration: Improved communication and teamwork between architects, engineers, and other design disciplines.

- Fewer errors: Early identification of discrepancies in the design phase minimizes errors and rework later on.

- Reduced RFIs: By catching and resolving issues early, you'll see a significant decrease in Requests for Information during construction, saving time and money.

- Cost and time savings: Fixing errors upfront translates to significant cost and time savings for your project.

More about our BIM Design Coordination process

Last, but not least, Franco also focused on the advantages of BIM Design Coordination as a crucial step in the early stage of the project in the early steps of the project lifecycle. This practice involves meticulously reviewing drawings and 3D models from all the disciplines. We leverage our professional expertise and a suite of powerful software tools to identify discrepancies between disciplines. Here are the features of our service:

- Heat maps: Based on our experience and the specific project criteria, we create heat maps to pinpoint critical zones requiring more focus.

- Navisworks: This software allows us to combine and analyze information from all disciplines involved in the project.

- Revit: Identified clashes are transferred to Revit to create a 3D model, clearly representing potential problems.

- Power BI: We use Power BI to generate user-friendly reports that categorize group clashes. This makes it easy for everyone on the design team to understand and address the issues.

In short, BIM Design Coordination, powered by expertise and a technological approach, offers a valuable toolkit for construction projects. By identifying and resolving design discrepancies early on, you can achieve significant cost and time savings. Moreover, the user-friendly reports generated with Power BI facilitate seamless information sharing among all project stakeholders. Do you want to learn more? Contact our specialists!
